Once you have made initial contact, you can arrange a visit to the college to discuss your particular requirements in further detail. The Principal interviews all prospective A level retake students to assess their areas of weakness and ensure that an appropriate retake programme can be put together. Our aim is for every student to fulfil their academic potential, so it is important that we consider goals that are realistic and achievable. A formal offer will be made if we are satisfied that we can meet the specific needs of a student.

When a student has enrolled in a retake course, we will normally assign one tutor for each subject, although on rare occasions a subject may be taught by two tutors working on separate topics. Each student will have their own individually designed timetable which takes into consideration their personal situation, such as commuting time or other commitments. Students are generally only required to come in to college for their timetabled lessons, although they are welcome and encouraged to study independently using our facilities, as well as become part of a very relaxed and friendly college community.

As all students will have different needs, their tutors will each agree a scheme of work with them to plan how the course will be delivered over the year. A range of informal and formal assessments will be regularly set, with formal mock exams taking place in December and March. Each student has a personal tutor who oversees their progress so that any concerns can be flagged and handled quickly. We always keep parents informed with progress updates at half-term and comprehensive end of term reports.

In addition to the one-to-one tuition, our A level retake students can also take full part in college life with our Year 12 and Year 13 students. We have weekly PSHCE sessions on a range of topics and we also give all our students the opportunity to partake in sports sessions. Regular social activities are planned throughout the year, as well as trips and outings to university lectures, theatres, museums and galleries.

When it comes to exam time in the summer, our students are understandably nervous, but they are fully prepared following their A level retake course with us. Our exam room is very small and seats up to 9 candidates, so it is a much less daunting environment than a large school hall, and helps to alleviate any last-minute exam jitters. Some of our retake students may also be studying different subjects at another school, but they are able to sit all their exams at our centre.
