CAREERS GUIDANCE
Our chief aim is for each student to achieve their own potential and most important of all is to provide information, advice and guidance which broadens options and opportunities rather than closes them down.
We have high aspirations for each and every student and our onward destinations are some of the most impressive in the country, despite the fact that we are a non-selective college. We listen to our students, appreciate their unique strengths and help them decide which steps to take so that they can make a successful transition to adult life.
Our Careers Lead Virginia Maguire has specialised in providing careers and higher education guidance for the past 20 years. She is a former Principal of the college and now works part time supporting students with their UCAS applications or other chosen onward destinations.
Virginia has an ‘open door’ policy and each student receives individual, expert and impartial careers guidance throughout their time at the college. This is offered in addition to a stable careers education programme and visiting speakers who can offer students meaningful encounters with the workplace. We also aim to develop the skills and knowledge that are required in the increasingly digitalised modern workplace, and to advise students on how to get work experience which will boost their school-leaver CVs.
Most students at the college aspire to go on to a good university, and one of the main reasons why they enrol at Westminster Tutors is because of our long-standing expertise in this field. Each year at least 95% of our sixth form leavers progress on to university, and well over half of our leavers take places at the UK’s prestigious Russell Group universities. For students who do not wish to go to university, Virginia is equally able to provide advice on apprenticeships and vocational training. This includes support throughout any necessary application process, including checking students’ application forms, writing references and helping them prepare for interviews or assessment days. She can also provide assistance with overseas applications, particularly to the US, and will liaise with specialist counsellors who may be supporting students’ international applications.
